Marvin Rating System
Marvin rates every horse using two or three numbers:
- Weight Rating – traditional handicapper logic
- Speed Rating – compares race time to track average, adjusted for conditions
- Surge Rating – used at most metro meetings when the last 400m sectionals are available; it doubles the impact of a horse’s finish to show if it’s hitting the line or fading
All rating methods are explained in the Marvin Compendium, which comes free when you sign up. It also includes a full-season racing calendar.
Performance Prediction
Marvin factors in distance, grade, jockey, barrier, weight, and past runs. It builds a base rating using age and run history, then applies bonuses and penalties for upcoming race conditions—grade, trip, jockey, weight, and more.
These ratings come from a private database built by a now-retired pro form analyst, previously shared only with a small group of clients. That data now powers Marvin.
